The MediaArtHistories masters program conveys the most important developments of contemporary art through a network of renowned international theorists, artists and curators like Steve DIETZ, Erkki HUHTAMO, Lev MANOVICH, Christiane PAUL, Jens HAUSER, Paul SERMON, Christa SOMMERER, Gerfried STOCKER, knowbotic research, Edward SHANKEN, Oliver GRAU and many others. Historical derivations that go far back into art and media history are tied in intriguing ways to digital art. Key approaches and methods from Image Science, Media Archaeology and the History of Science & Technology will be discussed. Media Art History offers a basis for understanding evolutionary history of audiovisual media, from the Laterna Magica to the Panorama, Phantasmagoria, Film, and the Virtual Art of recent decades. Using online databases and other modern aids, knowledge of computer animation, net art, interactive, telematic and genetic art as well as the most recent reflections on nano art, CAVE installations, augmented reality and wearables are introduced. Artists and programmers give new insights into the latest software and interface developments.
The course is held predominantly in English, the master´s thesis can be composed either in English or in German.

VIDA 11.0 AWARDS
VIDA 11.0 rewards works of art developed with artificial life technologies and related disciplines: robotics, artificial intelligence, etc. It is looking for works of art with emerging behaviours, which evolve over time, react with their environment and seem to have a life of their own. VIDA 11.0 is searching projects that relate technology with biology and that research synthetic characteristics of modern life.
In previous editions, prizes have been awarded to artistic projects created with robots, avatars, recursive chaotic algorithms, knowbots, cellular automata, computer viruses, virtual ecologies that evolve with user interaction, interactive architectures, augmented reality pieces and works that explore the social aspects of A-life.
A total of €40,000 will be awarded to the three projects selected by the jury: First prize: €18,000(*), Second prize: €14,000(*), Third prize: €8,000(*). The winning pieces may be exhibited at Fundación Telefónica Virtual Museum and in the exhibitions related to art and new technologies it organises or takes part in.
Works of art submitted must not be more than two years old. This enables the Competition to keep updated and aware of the last technological trends in the field of artificial life.

The second category of the VIDA 11.0 International Competition aims to help fund artistic A-life projects (and related disciplines) that have not yet been created. The competition is open to participants from Iberoamerica, Spain and Portugal.
With prize money totalling €40,000 (*)., this category will reward from one to three projects that deal with a relevant A-life concept and demonstrate the artist's capacity to produce the piece and outstanding quality in previous work.

Aferro Studio Residency
Now Accepting applications for 2009 artists in residence
Due December 15, 2008 (not postmark)
www.aferro.org
About Gallery Aferro:
Gallery Aferro is an artist owned and operated alternative space
founded in 2003 by Evonne M. Davis and Emma Wilcox. The mission of
Gallery Aferro is to bring cultural education and esthetic engagement
with contemporary issues to all people equally, and to create an
environment where artists can gather and share physical and
intellectual resources. We are working towards an arts community that
is available to everyone, without sacrificing quality of experience.
Founded in a converted factory building in the Ironbound, Gallery
Aferro was planned as a pilot project to be recreated in different
architectural forms, in multiple American cities.
The gallery is currently being run out of a donated 4 story building
in downtown Newark, NJ. We offer 12 exhibitions a year, featuring
local, national and international artists, a wide variety of events
such as
interactive public art projects, performances, talks, film screenings,
portfolio reviews and public usage based on the stated needs of the
community. We launched our residency program in 2006 and were one of
four nationwide recipients of a 2007 New York State Workspace
Consortium grant to improve it. A publishing line has been launched,
consisting of exhibition catalogs, original essays, and artist books.
About the Residency:
Several of the 06-07 Aferro Studio residents have commented that the
chance for informal networking with peers afforded by residency in the
building was one of the best aspects of their experience. Also
mentioned by residents consistently as a unique and valuable aspect of
the program was temporary ownership of a platform to interact with the
public.
Residents will be awarded a 1200-2000 sq ft studio for 6 months, with
24 hr access, access to visiting curators and other gallery directors,
a solo exhibition in our project space, and inclusion in an
end-of-program catalog highlighting their work over the length of the
residency. The current Aferro building can accommodate up to 5 artists
at a time. Artists will be selected on the basis of quality of work,
commitment to their field, and ability to interact positively with the
community at large. The program will aim for a mix of Newark and
non-Newark residents.
The Studios
Studios range in size from 1200 to 2000 square feet. The studios are
strictly work only spaces. The studios are raw spaces with minimal
amenities. Artists who are accepted into the program must be prepared
to actively use their studio. 6-month slots are available beginning
Feb 23, 2009.
Artist Responsibilities
$200 a month per studio covers all utilities.
Eligibility
There is no residency restriction for applicants. Artists in any
media may apply. The building is not appropriate for welding and
other open flame activities. Please contact us with any questions
about your application, our space or what you might want to do with
your time at Aferro.

MEDIATOPIA / ISEA SINGAPORE 2008
Call for Participation:
Submit any media files, playlists, links, node coordinates, live webcasts or URLs.
Please read criteria for Border Transmissions at ISEA 2008 Singapore for related context.
Your media can be uploaded or linked into the Mediatopia database and be included in the participatory sequence produced onsite at the National Gallery of Singapore and viewable / re mixable / mash-up-able on the net via live webcast.
For more information on this project, to submit images and to view the live broadcast visit the project site at: www.mediatopia.org.
Project Details:
The Mediatopia Project and related events will reflect upon the ISEA 2008 Border Transmissions Theme and will exploit the potential of networks, communication tools, alternate economies and experiential technologies as a collaborative engine to enable the emergence of a different conception of borders, and of the transmissions that problematize these demarcations.
It also seeks to expand the models of production and distribution that have arisen as social networks, hardware, generative software components, small-scale download practices and peer-to-peer protocols have changed the nature of not only how material is made but distributed. Mediatopia will act as an incubator and working model for experimentation, inquiry, and cross-cultural collaboration within the framework of these overarching themes.
Mediatopia seeks to expand upon the concepts of production and distribution as participants contribute discrete media from a variety of readily available sources, recognizing advances in technology, software and social networking strategies that have arisen in recent years. The Mediatopia project will be able to function as an international mashup/remix of broadcast media and simultaneously as a database and interface of freely accessible sound/video materials that transcends time, location, cultural and geographical borders without emphasis on market driven outcome.
The Mediatopia Project and scheduled events at ISEA 2008 will function as the primary event host while numerous satellite nodes worldwide will serve to further expand and engage the participating individuals in creative collaborations and cross cultural exchanges. The Mediatopia Project and related international events will be accessible online and live throughout ISEA Singapore 2008 and culminate in a 24 hour live remix in the Gallery Theatre at the National Museum of Singapore. To view, participate and/or contribute to the project or to see a complete list of participating artists and scheduled events both onsite and at remote nodes, please visit the project website at: http://www.mediatopia.org

Birth Video
Building on the conceptual foundations brought forth through the works of psychologist Jacques Lacan and artist/writer Mary Kelly this project considers the current state of birth (reception and projection) in its captured form. Afterbirth is a proposed multi-channel, projected video installation. Live birth video will be sourced and edited from submissions received through an open call posted through internet communities.
WHY
1 : I dont remember being born, but my son (b.2000) does. He saw it on video. Now he “remembers.” How does this impossible memory change a perception of women, sexuality, discovery, privacy, self? (reception)
2 : A YouTube keyword search for “live birth,” “birth,” “home birth” turns up thousands of relevant results. Once the most private and mysterious processes of life, women now publish themselves in the throws of labor on the internet for their friends, neighbors, and the whole world to see, share and comment on. How does this presentation change the position of women, sexuality, discovery, privacy, self? (projection)
HOW
Afterbirth is comprised of several fluid video and sound composites projected and/or streamed. Visual and sonic content will be visceral (bodily, overstimulating) and intimate (human, emotional) and edited from live birth video submissions.
WHO
Artist/editor, contributors, and audience are all authors and partcipants, informing the collective result. Formally, this project is a processed visual and sound experience, but in broader sense it is a human study exploring a universal theme. Afterbirth is an investigation of the shift in memory, perception, this position of women, sexuality, discovery, and privacy.
Please send miniDV, dvd ntsc, or quicktime video of your birth experience to:

Piksel08: code dreams
december 4-7 2008
Bergen, Norway
How does code dream? What are the dreams of code?
Piksel08 examines the other side of code, an alternative side to a hard-coded
reality of work and play. Open hardware and free software project a utopic
vision, yet exist within economies of capital, the dream factory of
mainstream technology. Within the chance meeting of sewing machine and
umbrella on the dissecting table, hardware and software are flattened.
Piksel08: code dreams explores the dreams of this soft machine; bachelors
coding for pleasure, reverse engineering paranoiac constructs of the real,
automatic coding practice, soft hardware, and everyday magic.
<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>
**open call:
1. Installations
Projects related to the code dreams theme including but not restricted to:
reverse engineering, soft hardware, code poetry, novel instruction sets,
invisible exploration, ghosted computation...
programmed by and running on free and open source software and/or open/DIY
hardware.
2. Audiovisual performance
Live art realised by the use of free and open source software. We specially
encourage live coding and DIY hardware projects to apply.
3. Software/Hardware
Innovative DIY hardware and audiovisual software tools or software art
released under an open licence.

The Geographical Web or Geoweb
Call for Projects: Residency Program for Web Art
Deadline: August 15, 2008.
Throughout the year 2009, Agence TOPO will produce a body of Web works comprising geographic references. The selection of the works and their critical contextualization will be ensured by the guest curator Sylvie Parent.
Nowadays, the popularity of cartographic and earth visualization tools such as Google Maps and Google Earth has become an increasingly tangible component of how we experience the Web. Moreover, the use of geolocalization systems, such as GPS, is spreading and increasingly present in the digital world. Artists are appropriating these technologies to create travelogues, to reflect on urban space, and to conceive collective psychogeography and locational media projects.
Artists interested in this theme, and by the production context offered by Agence TOPO are encouraged to submit their proposals. The projects could also include an “off screen” component, such as performance, installation, exhibition or mobile networks, that complements and expands the Web features and possibilities.
In order to respect the foreseen deadlines, projects currently under development and those demonstrating a strong commitment from the artists will be given priority. The selected artists and projects will benefit from technical support for a period of 4 to 8 weeks within a residency program that can be spread out over time depending on the artists’ needs and specific project requirements.
The selected artists will have the following benefits:
- Production fees
- Access to a computer and audiovisual equipment
- Web design assistance (programming and multimedia integration)
- Organization of a launching event in Montreal (Fall 2009)
- Publication
Submissions / Due date: August 15, 2008
- Project proposal
- Description of technical needs
- Proposed work timetable (Spring – Summer 2009)
- Summary of artistic approach
- Press kit
- Curriculum vitae
- Visual/audiovisual documentation
- A stamped addressed envelope for the return of the documents
We do not accept proposals sent by email
