"Not From Here, Not Now," - The Exhibition

In the exhibition "Not from here, not now," Yali Amit presents a series of photograph that were taken during a trip to Georgia last summer. The photographs depict contradictory and abutting points between different layers of society and between different generations, in a country that for a hundred years has oscillated between ancient and glorious local customs and the Communist regime that attempted to create a new world in one day, and a market economy simultaneously. For Yali Amit, Georgia's condition constitutes an example of a society in crisis. "My work portrays situations that I contemplate and examine but do not judge," he says about himself. "It records a society in transition-its past is known, its present is confused and its future, unclear. The Georgia that is depicted in the work is a metaphor for a society (or a single person) undergoing processes of change. In this case, the beginning of the change is linked to liberation (the fall of the USSR), which is mingled with aspirations for independence, optimism and great faith. After the liberation comes the disillusionment, which brings on atrophy and corruption. The consequence of disillusionment engenders, among others, nostalgic musing about the past and difficulties in discerning the good in the present, as portrayed in the pictures. This is a simultaneous march forward and backward."

Yali Amit is a young photographer and photograph teacher, a graduate of the Photograph Department of the Hadassah College
