The "Playground" project attempts to transform the gallery into a space where temptation and menace, boundaries, regulations and the sense of freedom, trial and error - all find expression in play. The Playground is an opportunity for free exploration and discovery.

"In the Playground project we attempt to examine two aspects relating to play.

One aspect hinges upon the tension between two essentially different types of play: one, where (relatively) strict rules make the participating subject into an object discharging a clearly defined role. The course of the game is determined by the rules, and the player forfeits his/her freedom of action. The other type of play involves search, testing, discovery- the process whereby babies and children (adults too on occasion) study the surrounding world. The rules of the game are modified by the subject. The object of the game mostly loses its original functional substance. The subject retains his/her freedom of action in relation to rules and objects alike.

A further motif we attempt to explore is the dynamic engendered in the space that we, as adult society, define as our children's playground. This dynamic is a product of: the desire to construct an enjoyable space; the dangers accompanying activity therein; and the safety mechanisms (reflecting our anxieties) and their impact upon the mode of play.
